Sure, I don't have anything better to do.

All right, then. Just remember-- you asked for it.

So two years ago, around when Shepard died, I wound up leaving my job as a cop. Traveled over to a cesspool of a city called Omega. I figured I could make more of a difference there than I did anywhere else, other than when I was on a mission on the Normandy.

After a few months of killing mercs-gone-bad, I managed to gather a team. Really good guys who all believed in the same thing I did: that we could clean up Omega and make it safer for the civilians.

Well, as you can imagine, the local mercs didn't really appreciate us butting into their business. Eventually, they wound up getting to one of my men. Sidonis.

That bastard led me away on a fake assignment while these merc groups got together and destroyed the rest of my team. By the time I realized what was going on, there were only two men left. And they didn't last long. I barely had time to cover them up, show them some respect, before the mercs regrouped and came after me.

...I don't remember how long I held them all off. To be honest, I'm pretty sure I expected to die back there. I was gonna give them one hell of a fight, but, face it, the odds weren't exactly in my favor.

That's when Shepard showed up. She'd been dead for two years, so you can imagine her being a sight for sore eyes.

She managed to help hold off the merc bands for a few hours until they brought in a gunship. I was alone up on a balcony at that point, so there was really nothing she could do.

Wound up taking a rocket to the face. Naturally, I was out for the rest of that fight. When I woke up, I was pretty much drowning in my own blood and guts. Not pretty.

But Shepard got me back to the Normandy in time, and here I am.

[There's a long pause where Garrus takes a looooong drink. He fucking needs it after recounting all taht.]

...I failed each and every one of my men. If I had been just a little more careful, quicker, more vigilant, something, they'd probably still be alive today.

When I saw what they'd done to you, how we were almost too late, I flashed back to that.

[Fox is silent for a few moments after Garrus finished speaking. He looks a bit troubled, the subject of traitors isn't one he particularly enjoys.]

I'm so sorry, Garrus. For making you worry like that.

[Fox cleared his throat and took a sip from his glass. he tried to straighten up in his chair, but still ended up with his arms crossed on the table for support. Being a light weight sucked, especially when one was trying to pep talk someone]

Listen. You can't blame yourself for that. If that guy was someone you trusted, then you had no reason not to believe him. He's the one that betrayed you, he's the one that failed your men. Not you. You were a victim of someone else's betrayal just like they were.

I wasn't there, and I don't know all the details, but you are a good leader, a great leader, and I'm sure you did everything in your power. You never half-ass anything, after all. And, I'm pretty impressed, in fact. To be the sort of person you are now after something like that, you're a really strong guy, Garrus.

[Fox paused, scratching his ear a bit awkwardly.]

I think, if my dad had survived, he would have been a lot like you.

[Garrus mumbles his thanks at Fox's reassurances. He'd heard the same from Shepard, and from the few other people that knew what happened back on Omega, and it helped, but part of him will always blame himself for what happened, and never let him live it down. He's okay with it, for the most part-- it would be disrespectful to his men to believe otherwise]

[At the last part, though, he gives a snort. Not against Fox's father, but against his own tendencies]

You sure you would want that? He'd be a bitter old man.

Personality-wise, you're nothing alike. He was always in a good mood, always smiling, always finding something to laugh about. He liked to joke around a lot. It was rare to catch him in a bad mood, he was generally pretty laid back, even in serious situations.

You're kind of a hardass and constantly high strung.

But when it comes to your men and getting things done, your whole sense of honor and justice and everything. That's where you're similar.

I'm working on it, anyway. If I can be at least half the man that he was, I'll be satisfied.
