Hm? Well, he was a mercenary, like I said. Started off in the military actually. After mom passed away, he decided to start up his own freelance team.

How big was the team?

[Garrus leans over onto his crossed arms. He's intrigued, bro!]

It was just three guys, dad and a couple old friends of his from back when he was still enlisted. Dad waited 'til I went off to the academy to invest in a flagship for the team, but before that they just operated from Corneria.

Actually, he never got a chance to use the flagship.

[OH IS HE. well fox is just going to trail off here and sip at that drink again]

But he managed to invest in one before?

[He's trying not to be blunt about the whole YOUR DAD IS DEEEEEAAAAD thing there, but it probably comes off as such anyway]

He took out an 80 year loan on it, had it custom built. It's a great ship.

[it's ok Garrus Fox prefers blunt to beating around the bush like a pansy. Which is kind of what he started doing there himself with the whole ship thing. He scratches the back of his head for a second before continuing.]

Anyway, his team took a job from the military before the flagship was finished. I guess they must have borrowed a military transport or something since they had to go clear across the Lylat system to do the job.

The mission must've been desperate if they allowed a merc band on board a military vessel. Or your dad must've pulled some serious strings.

He had friends in high places, but he also had a really good rep. There weren't too many trustworthy mercenaries back in the Lylat system. The mission was a pretty big deal, some mad scientist that the head of the army had banished to Venom was up to something, they didn't know what. Dad's team was sent out there to investigate. I guess the military was short on resources at the time or something. Never have been a huge fan of them.

Anyway, once they got there, one of dad's own teammates betrayed them. It really... came out of nowhere, nobody was expecting it.

[Hoo boy, that last one hits a sore spot]

Nobody ever really does.

What happened then? With the mission, I mean.

They weren't able to complete it. Dad was killed by another mercenary, Peppy barely made it home alive. Pigma, he ended up joining the guy that killed Dad.

[Fox was quiet for a moment, giving the contents of his glass a swirl before finishing it off.]

There aren't many people I would kill on sight, but Pigma. He's at the top of the list.

[Now where has he heard that before?]

[Maybe it's time to pass some mentor-student knowledge along, even though Fox is growing to be more of an equal every day]

It just shows you've still got a chance not to let revenge ya. It's tempting, it's really, really tempting, but you'll come out for the better if you let it go.

[He kind of sounds like he's trying to convince himself a bit, but, for the most part, Garrus truly believes in those words]

It hasn't been an issue so far, after all the guy isn't even here. I honestly don't know what I'd do if he ever showed up. He took the only family I had left from me. I don't...

[Fox paused, straightening up in his seat.This is why he usually didn't drink. That, and the last time he went out drinking with someone, his wallet went missing 8(]

Nerdy human kid with glasses, he was working at the pound this month. He told me that a dinosaur in blue armor busted in and put a gun in his back, and then headbutted him in the face.

[fox doesn't seem too bothered by this. IN FACT, he looks rather amused.]

I told him not to scream, but he went ahead and did it anyway. Pissed himself too.
